Absolute

  • Abnormalities of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying such as stricture or achalasia.
  • Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes.
  • Hypocalcemia.
  • Hypersensitivity to alendronate or any of the excipients.

Rare but serious

osteonecrosis of the jaw · atypical femoral fractures · severe esophagitis · esophageal ulcer · uveitis · scleritis · symptomatic hypocalcemia

Pregnancy and lactation

Insufficient human data. Discontinue when pregnancy is recognized. There is a theoretical risk of fetal harm (incorporation into the fetal skeleton) and adverse effects on delivery due to maternal hypocalcemia.
