Approved indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension.
Contraindications
Absolute
- Bradycardia (<50 bpm), 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, heart failure, severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min), severe hepatic impairment.
Clinical warnings
- Major warning · Do not discontinue treatment abruptly due to risk of rebound hypertension. Withdraw gradually over 2 weeks. — AEMPS CIMA
Drug interactions

Mechanism: Tricyclic antidepressants may reduce the effect of centrally acting antihypertensive agents.
Recommendation: Avoid concomitant administration.

Pregnancy and lactation
Should not be used during pregnancy unless strictly necessary. It is excreted in breast milk and therefore should not be used during lactation.
