Approved indications

• Treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease.
• Treatment of arterial hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

Contraindications

Clinical warnings

• Major warning · Risk of fluid and electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia). Periodic monitoring of electrolytes is required, especially in elderly patients, those with cirrhosis, or on concomitant treatment with corticosteroids or laxatives. — AEMPS SPC

Drug interactions

  Mechanism: Additive effect. Torasemide can potentiate the ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity of aminoglycosides, especially at high doses or in patients with renal impairment.

  Recommendation: Avoid concomitant use if possible. If necessary, closely monitor renal function, electrolyte levels, and hearing.

  Mechanism: NSAIDs can reduce the diuretic and antihypertensive effect of torasemide by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. They may also increase the risk of renal failure.

  Recommendation: Monitor blood pressure and renal function. A dose adjustment of torasemide may be necessary.
