Absolute

  • Renal impairment or renal markers above initiation thresholds; hypersensitivity to cidofovir; inability to receive probenecid or other sulfonamides; direct intraocular administration.
  • Concomitant use with other potentially nephrotoxic drugs.

Proteinuria, nausea, vomiting, fever, asthenia, and neutropenia

Rare but serious

Renal failure, Fanconi syndrome, severe neutropenia, uveitis, and ocular hypotony

Pregnancy and lactation

Cidofovir is embryotoxic and potentially carcinogenic. Avoid pregnancy: women must use effective contraception during treatment and for 1 month afterward; men must use condoms during treatment and for 3 months afterward. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
