Approved indications

Relief of symptoms of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.

Contraindications

Absolute

Hypersensitivity to glucosamine or to any of the excipients.
Allergy to shellfish, as the active substance is obtained from shellfish.

Clinical warnings

Caution in patients with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes mellitus. Monitoring of blood glucose levels is recommended at the start of treatment. — AEMPS CIMA

Mechanism: Mechanism unknown. An increased effect of coumarin anticoagulants (increased INR) has been reported.
Recommendation: Closer monitoring of coagulation parameters (INR) is required when initiating or stopping glucosamine therapy in patients on coumarin anticoagulants.

There are no adequate data from the use of glucosamine in pregnant women. It should not be used during pregnancy. No data is available on the excretion into human milk, therefore its use is not recommended during lactation.
